Railing business
marketing.

A homeowner wants black aluminum rail on the deck by Friday. A GC wants balcony guards to code. Both start with a measure, and both go to the shop that answers first.

Per-foot price calls

Callers want a price per linear foot before you know the post count, the mounting or the finish. You either guess or lose them.

Failed guard inspections

A guard that fails inspection over baluster spacing or height comes back to your shop at your cost, and the homeowner tells the neighbors.

Powder coat waits

Iron and aluminum wait on the powder coater. Customers nobody told about the lead time call every week to ask.

Big-box kit quotes

Homeowners price a railing kit at the home center first. Without photos of finished custom work, your quote looks like the expensive option, not the better one.

Your questions

Do I need a permit to install a railing?

Often, when the railing is a required guard on a deck, porch, balcony or stair, and the rules vary by town. A like-for-like replacement may not need one. The building department decides, so tell customers up front who pulls the permit.

How much does a custom railing cost?

It depends on the material, the length, the posts and how they mount, the finish and the site. Iron and glass usually cost more than aluminum or cable. A site measure turns a ballpark into a price.
